The Moonlight
Colourthon
organised by
Southend Round
Table and
supported by the
Evening Echo,
returned for
only its second
year and
delivered yet
another amazing
effort for
charities far
and wide. The 13
mile walk opened
by the Mayor of
Southend, Gwen
Horrigan, raised
£144,000 for
over 200
charities.
In just two
years the
charity event
has raised
£300,000. Rob
Wright, this
year’s lead
organiser spoke
to the crowd
just before the
start and said.
“On behalf of
Round Table, I’d
like to thank
each and every
one of you for
coming out and
taking part.
Because of you,
charities far
and wide will
benefit from
your efforts and
will be able to
continue their
valuable work.
You have made me
so proud.”
Walkers in their
hundreds,
dressed in every
colour
imaginable took
to the streets
of Southend.
This year’s
event was
covered live by
BBC Essex.
Presenters Steve
Scruton and Ian
Wyatt raced
around the
course getting
interviews with
walkers, who
listened in via
their radios,
making the whole
spectacle fun
and interactive.
Earlier on in
the park, Virgin
provided the
official
pre-event warm
up, and was a
real sight to
see as nearly
1000 walkers
limbered up for
the walk. Also
as part of the
warm up, the
Park View Suite
of Chalkwell
Park brought
their kitchens
out into the
field, and
served up a
special carb
loaded menu for
walkers.
Volunteers from
the Round Table,
41 Club, Ladies
Circle, Crouch
Valley
Motorcycle Club
and many others
helped steward
the route,
making it again
a well organised
and safe event.
St John
Ambulance
provided a fleet
of vehicles that
sweeped the 13
mile course in
case any walkers
needed medical
assistance.
The first
walkers
completed the
course in an
amazing two and
a half hours,
and the last
one’s back came
in at just after
1am.
Another amazing
fact is that
Southend Round
Table organises
events like this
and the annual
Big Beach Bang
firework show
with a
membership of
just 12 members!
