Tablers Support Big Apple Challenge

Billericay Round Table had a run-in with the law this week when Met Policeman Chris Harding attended their monthly meeting and received a donation towards his charity bike ride for the Jack Brown Appeal.

Chris, 34, who is based at Romford police station, will be joined by 15 other police officers from the UK on a staggering 220 mile cycling trip that will take him from New York to Rhode Island in the US. The gruelling challenge, which will also involve American police officers from both cities, will take place over the course of 7th to 9th September 2007.

Jack Brown, aged 5, is suffering from a rare childhood cancer called neuroblastoma - a solid tumour cancer which spreads rapidly. Recurrence after treatment is currently considered non-curative in the UK. Jack's current treatment will require in excess of $750,000. There is currently no UK government funding for this treatment, so this is the only hope for Jack and his family.

Jack's parents, both Detective Sergeants at the Metropolitan Police, have moved their family, including his brother Connor, 10, and sister Rhian, 7, to the US, where they continue to support Jack's relentless fight to beat this disease. They are staying in a room at Ronald McDonald House, which provides a "home away from home" for families whose children are undergoing treatment at nearby hospitals.

Billericay Round Table were made aware of Chris' challenge and were eager to support the cause by way of a £1000 donation towards the appeal. All of the Round Table members are aged between 18 and 45 so many are fathers themselves and could relate to Jack's family.

Speaking after being presented the cheque, Chris said "I am very grateful to Will Fraser and all of the other guys in Billericay Round Table for their kind donation and supporting the Jack Brown Appeal."
